Along with eating a diet rich in all the essential nutrients, one of the key points to keep in mind while leading a healthy lifestyle is to preserve your own food at home. Learning how to store food items in a smart and healthy way not only prepares you for survival but it also ensures a long life for you and your family.
In this article, we provide a list of food items and ways to preserve them.
• Fruits and vegetables- When it comes to fruits always remember not to keep cut pieces for long. It is best to eat cut pieces immediately. Fresh fruits should always be stored in the refrigerator. On the other hand, vegetables must be wrapped in cloth bags and then stored in zip lock bags.
• Spices- Some commonly used spices in our kitchen cabinet are garlic powder, cumin, chili powder, cinnamon and black pepper. In order to ensure that these do not get spoilt, they must be kept in air tight containers. Always store them in the refrigerator.
• Sugar- often times, we notice that sugar container is filled with ants. One effective trick to keep ants away is to add a few cloves in the sugar jar. This will also prevent the sugar granules from becoming lumpy.
• Salt- Another essential ingredient to make any dish is salt. One of the ways salt can become spoilt is it might get dried up too soon. Hence, in order to ensure it doesn’t happen, add a few grains of rice in the salt container. Rice absorbs excess moisture.
