Sweet Toothin’ - Tiramisu – Italy

The iconic Italian dessert tiramisu has a controversial history. Although we know it is from Italy, hardly anyone knows who actually created it. But if you’re looking for an origin story, all you’ll find is a detailed account of how it was served in brothels all over the gorgeous Treviso, a northern Italian town which was once known as, Italy’s ‘happiness and sex kingdom’. The dessert, as we know it today, is made up of Savoiardi ladyfinger biscuits that are soaked in coffee, and are then used to create alternating layers with a sweet mascarpone and cheese mixture. Marsala wine and chocolate powder are optional additions, and the result is out of this world. The strong flavour of coffee, the richness of the cheese, and the change in texture from the biscuits makes for a mind-blowing dessert that managed to stay alive even after the government shut all ‘pleasure houses’ in Treviso in 1958. The original recipe was slightly different and consisted of a shaken egg yolk and sugar. Even today, many Italian mothers whip up the old recipe to feed to their sons, believing it makes them stronger as they grow.   -Pic: Pixabay.com
