The Sultan of Cars Who: Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei Known for: Just 7,000 cars!

Straight out of the pages of a car magazine, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei owns over 7,000 high-performance cars valued at an astonishing $5 billion. An international phenomenon, the sultan’s passion for expensive, beautiful, rare and fast cars knows no boundaries. However, the number of purchases he made for his business interests versus the number that he retains for use by himself and his family differ considerably.

According to Guinness World Records (as of 2017), the Sultan of Brunei’s personal private collection included more than 600 Rolls-Royces. Why would anybody own over 600 Rolls-Royces rides, you ask? Bolkiah can, is the simple answer. And while his RR collection is still considered the largest in the world, the non-Rolls-Royces in his $5 billion garage are equally impressive. The world’s second-longest reigning current monarch and avid car collector has over 450 Ferraris, 574 Mercedes-Benzes, 382 Bentleys, 209 BMWs, 179 Jaguars, 134 Koenigseggs (the largest collection in the world), 21 Lamborghinis, 11 Aston Martins, and 1 SSC.

It’s said that during the 1990s, his family accounted for almost half of all Rolls-Royce purchases, adding unique cars to their own collection and bulk-buying slightly modified vehicles for diplomats. Not just that, he also owns every Formula 1 car that has won a championship since 1980. Incredibly, the iconic brands Porsche and Rolls-Royce once combined their designs to make a one-of-a-kind hybrid, just for him! Named Rolls-Royce Cloudesque, because the headlights were designed in a Silver Cloud III style –with chrome eyelids – the car is also referred to as Rolls-Royce Phantom VII. The exterior reminds one of a stretched Phantom V limousine, where the extra length has been added at the B-pillar. The boot is, however, redesigned, and resembles a Silver Seraph.

Other notable cars in his collection include a BMW Nazca M12, a 1991 concept car built with a V12 engine that would produce 295 horsepower and reached a top speed of 180 mph. Lamborghini Diablo, Dauer 962 Le Mans, Bentley Dominator – the first SUV that Bentley was custom made in 1994, and which Bolkiah ordered six. Some other cars featuring prominently in the sultan’s collection are Ferrari 512bb, Mercedes Benz S73 T AMG Wagon, Porsche 959, Leblanc Mirabeau, Koenigsegg CCXR, and Ferrari F90 Testarossa
