Belonging to a Hyderabadi family and having grown up eating old-school Hyderabadi food made by his mother Doreen Hassan who is a notable cook and author of a memoir of heirloom Hyderabadi recipes, Saffron and Pearls, Sahil has learnt the mechanics of the cuisine. Aashica on the other hand comes from a strong hospitality background and is a graduate of Cornell School of Hotel Administration. She has also run award winning hotels in India. Both of their talents combined have resulted in a dining experience that is true to its roots and refined in its style. The recipes, which have been carefully archived over generations, are of authentic and traditional Hyderabadi dishes that will satisfy your palette with flavours that ooze the old world charm of the Nizams. The Begum herself is said to be an embodiment of the culture and cuisine, with a side of juicy gossip, a staple of the city.
Hyderabadi food, although complicated to master, is mouth-watering and fulfilling in a way that is special to this cuisine. All the dishes have the right balance of masala, yet manage to be light and delicious. Sassy Begum is famous for its home-style Hyderabadi Biryani which is arguably the most popular dish in the city of pearls. The restaurant has even won ‘The Big Biryani Review’, which was a tasting competition conducted by NDTV, bagging the title of the best tasting biryani. This dish comprises layers of fragrant rice coupled with juicy pieces of meat cooked to perfection. It is served with a side of Raita, as well as the classic Hyderabadi Mirchi Ka Saalan. The menu goes on to tempt you with mouth-watering vegetarian and non-vegetarian options that are sure to make you go back for another taste.
Some traditional Hyderabadi dishes on the menu include Tamatar Ka Kut, a tomato curry infused with paneer; Bagare Baingan, a sweet and sour brinjal curry; Dum Ka Murg, which is chicken cooked slowly in ‘Dum style’ inside a sealed pot. The Heritage Haleem is the evergreen Hyderabadi favourite which is essentially a stew comprising minced meat combined with spices and wheat to form a thick paste. The Shahi Raan Mussallam, a whole leg of lamb marinated overnight in Begum’s secret spices cooked to perfection over a charcoal fire, is definitely the showstopper.
