Remembering S P Balasubrahmanyam through Bollywood Melodies

The craft of late veteran singer S P Balasubrahmanyam aka SPB needs no introduction; the legend departs leaving behind a legacy like never before. Millions of hearts broke after coming across the news of the prominent singer’s demise. From grandparents, parents to kids, all the generations are mourning his loss as SPB was one singer who inspired and touched several lives through his craft, words and even his presence. SPB was known for his versatile style; his voice would beautifully blend with any actor’s on-screen persona and cater the needed emotion to the listeners effortlessly - a reason why his songs are called evergreen. In his entire career, he has sung over 40,000 songs in around 16 languages which include some memorable super hit Hindi numbers. Remembering the prolific singer, let’s take a look at some of his Bollywood Melodies that we are all hooked to, even after such a long time!

Tere Mere Beech Mein
This track from the 1918 romantic-tragedy film Ek Duuje Ke Liye starring Kamal Haasan and Rati Agnihotri is one of S P Balasubrahmanyam’s soulful songs. It was this movie that SPB debuted with in Hindi film industry alongside Lata Mangeshkar and proved his calibre yet again with his second National Award.

Aya Mausam Dosti Ka
Maine Pyar Kiya was the film where the Jodi of Salman Khan and S P Balasubrahmanyam was created. If you’re a 90’s kid, it’s much likely that you associated SPB’s voice to Salman. This track is about the excitement and commitment that you have at the beginning of a friendship that later turns into love. And the late legendary singer brought that innocence into Salman’s character, Prem, through his youthful voice. The singer also bagged his fourth national award for this movie.

Saathiya Tune Kya Kiya
This tune from Salman Khan and Revathi starrer Love is my personal favourite from SPB’s Bollywood list. Paired along with Chithra, SBP created such magic that even today, people can’t stop falling in love with this melody. The song was later recreated as a remix recreated as a remix in the movie 2 States where Revathi (who played Alia Bhatt’s mother) performed it on stage at a concert.

Yeh Haseen Waadiyaan
The track is from Hindi dubbed version of Tamil romantic-thriller Roja directed by legendary filmmaker Mani Ratnam. Songs from this movie led A R Rahman to win a National Film Award for Best Music Direction. All the songs from the Hindi dubbed version have brilliant music, and this track sung by SPB and Chithra especially is as fresh to the listeners as it was back then.

Pehla Pehla Pyaar Hain
Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit starrer Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! is known for their beautiful chemistry and much credit goes to S P Balasubrahmanyam to do justice to Salman’s character. This song marks the confession of Prem’s love for Nisha and is one of the most soothing songs in Bollywood.

Jeeye to Jeeye Kaise
A perfect amalgamation of S P Balasubrahmanyam, Anuradha Paudwal and Kumar Sanu’s soulful voice, this emotional number from Saajan is one of SPB’s heartfelt numbers that will never get old. The singer lends his voice to Salman in this song while Sanu and Paudwal playback for Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit respectively. This film received immense love for its music and SPB played a major role in it.      –Srivalli and Pics: IANS
