Redefining haute couture : Mohammed Ashi

In the 21st century,  style trends within the fashion world are dominating more than ever. Fashion is no longer a means of clothing for your body, instead many young and talented designers are coming up with styles that are both bold and daring.  One such designer who has revolutionised the fashion industry within a short span of time is Mohammed Ashi.

Mohammed Ashi has carved a niche for himself by being different from the rest. He was born in Saudi Arabia in 1980. After graduating with a degree in marketing; this Lebanese designer pursued a degree in fashion design from Esmod Fashion School. After graduating, he started his career as an assistant for a leading Arab designer, Mohammed Berjawi. In 2005, he presented his first haute collection. The year after, he launched his haute couture and ready-to wear spring/summer collection 2006 with acclaimed designer Elie Saab. He then worked as an assistant designer on an exclusive collection of accessories, shoes, and bags for the autumn/winter collection 2006-07. Not just Elie Saab, but Ashi also collaborated with Millia Maron Studio and showcased a ready to wear women’s Autumn/Winter collection 2006 along with another women’s collection for Spring/Summer 2007.

In 2007, he founded his label Ashi Studio in Beirut. This designer studio has become popular not just in Beirut but even in other countries as well. Ashi started dominating the fashion world with his stunning, and unique designs. He is known for making outfits with sharp cuts and intricate details. Unlike several upcoming artists of the present generation, the designer has managed to capture the essence of luxury though an intricate work of embroidery.

In 2019, Ashi marked his first debut on an international platform as he presented his runway show at the Couture Week in Paris. The Spring 2019 collection was named ‘Letters to Margaret’. This distinctive collection consisted of 27 pieces. Ashi took inspiration from the 1950’s and 1990’s to design these outfits. The show-stopping dresses are made with rich fabrics like double satin, taffetas moiré and lace. Coming to the colour palette, the designer used a lot of bold colours, black and white. Some of the highlights we are the use of feathers, ruffles, pleats, sequins, and embroidery.

The designer’s recent FW 20/21 couture collection consists of a neutral colour palette with gowns in different shades of white. The intricate combination of materials with a variety of textiles were beautifully placed side by side. A few highlights of this collection are the rough edges and soft curves. Some of the pieces include a sleek black décolleté dress, jumpsuits, and voluminous tops.

After presenting his collection at the Paris Couture Week, several celebrities started donning his outfits. Stars like Beyoncé, Billy Porter, Cardi B, Zendaya, Winnie Harlow, Ciara, Erykah Badu, Nicole Scherzinger, Janaelle Monae, Coco Rocha, Heidi Klum, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Queen Rania have been spotted in his garments. The fashion label’s designs were also featured on the cover of L’Officiel, Numéro and Vogue.
