For the Mehta’s, Holi is all about spending time with family and friends, following traditions, and sharing happiness by throwing colours and enjoying a scrumptious meal with great fanfare. Vikram Mehta is an entrepreneur and owner of the well-known company, Prakash Lights. His wife Bina Mehta is editor of a Gujarati magazine and a choreographer.
Every year on this auspicious day, Bina and Vikram follow their family rituals: they wake up early in the morning, apply oil, and take blessings from their elders. Then they visit their friend’s house with delicious sweets and colours. Reflecting on some childhood memories, Bina says she and her friends had a great time during Holi, as they played all day with colours and balloons filled with colour water.
This year, Bina and Vikram will celebrate the festival with friends and relatives, with music and lots of food. For the last six years, they have been playing Holi with flower petals and organic colours. They believe that this is the best and safest way to celebrate, as these colours do not damage our skin, are inexpensive and can be made at home easily. The couple enjoys eating sweets, and some special sweets they make in their household include Mamra (rice flakes) Ladoo, Peanut Chikki, and Thandai.
