An image consultant by profession, Shweta Singh incorporated her zeal for fashion into her work. Applying all the right know-how, she educates people about the best way to make a strong impression. She talks to us about the key aspects of making a good first impression, the importance of appropriate clothing and her personal take on fashion. Read on.
What role do you play as an image consultant at Perfect Impressions?
We take the client through a process of lifestyle evaluation and then suggest levels of dressing for different situations. These include interviews, corporate meetings, cocktail evenings, wedding functions and so on. We give our clients tips on what to wear in accordance with their body shape, colour and preferences. As an image consultant, we are equipped to identify body shape and suggest ways to hide flaws and enhance positive points to create an attractive image. Every individual has a personal style, which they may not be aware of consciously. An image consultant has the knowledge and the tools to identify the personal style of an individual, and then suggest a clothing solution that incorporates this to create an authentic image. We beautify people.
How did you get into this field?
I like to see people making an effort to dress up, and have always dreamt of dressing them up. It’s all about impressions. People judge you in a matter of seconds and based on this first impression, they decide everything about you. Thus, the need to create the ‘Perfect Impression’ is very important.

What are the most important things to keep in mind when making a first impression?
Body language and etiquette are a big part of creating an image. As an image consultant, I take the client through appropriate etiquette training for dining, corporate meetings and other situations. Other than this, how you dress up is equally important. Understanding your plus and minus factors to highlight the former and tone down the latter is essential. This can be accomplished through the resourceful use of clothes, grooming and behaviour.
What made you shift fields after working in the fields of PR and event management?
After working closely in recruitment/hiring, employee relations, benefits and engagement, and observing people of different skill sets, I realised that professionals often have all the technical knowledge, but they lack soft skills. In today’s corporate world your appearance is an important factor, and can contribute immensely to your level of success. My passion and interest in fashion and styling has been instrumental in my decision to mentor people formally and informally. All this has contributed to my choosing to pursue a career in image management. I have successfully conducted corporate training programmes, trained budding image consultants and taken up one-to-one consulting on the art and science of image management. Through this work I have empowered people to project an authentic, attractive and appropriate image.

Tell us about your interest in fashion.
Fashion for me is my soul mate. I like to dress myself and people around.
How do you incorporate it in your work?
As part of the image-building process, we also act as personal shoppers to clients by guiding them on how to build their wardrobe in an affordable manner. After evaluating the client’s wardrobe and creating cluster plan sheets based on their roles, goals, body shape and personal style, we sometimes accompany them while shopping for new clothes. I source and collect some of the best pieces from across the world, and integrate them into every fashionista’s wardrobe.
What does your clothing line consist of?
My collection has clothes for all age groups. The brand philosophy involves combining elegant styles with trendy details and patterns using authentic fabrics. This has taken a younger, cooler turn this season by experimenting with newer silhouettes. This season is all about skin comfort. My clothing line consists of three collections: Spring Fling, Evening Luxe and Casual Chic. The Spring Fling collection is young, fun and flirtatious, and consists of maxis and short dresses, jumpsuits and more – all in bright colours and patterns. The Evening Luxe range is inspired by the high glam culture. It consists of cocktail dresses, evening gowns, one-shoulder tops and party wear accessories. As the name suggests, the Casual Chic collection is casual, slick and ultra-modern. It is an ode to the modern working woman who needs clothes for her professional and social gatherings.
What’s your personal fashion mantra?
Just be yourself! Create trends rather than follow them.
How do you manage your personal and professional lives?
I live my life the way it comes. I maintain a balance by not taking my work home and vice-versa.  My husband gives me the strength to follow my dreams, my parents give me motivation, and my kids give me faith. I live as one person, and don’t differentiate between any of my roles. With an easy and relaxed thought flow, I maintain the right balance and chord.
What are your other interests?
I am an ardent reader and love to read nonfictions. I love to travel and explore different parts of the world; it is truly a stress buster. And, of course, I love to shop!                                                                                                                                 --- as told to Niharika
