Broadcaster advertisements for matches between India and Pakistan have always captured the attention of the viewers. However, the latest advert released in Pakistan for the match against India in the World Cup has stopped to a new low.
The video released by Pakistan’s Jazz TV has a male model looking like IAF officer Abhinandan Varthaman with his trademark moustache, wearing a blue jersey and answering questions. The model repeats Abhinandan’s statement, “I’m sorry, I am not supposed to tell you this” several times. While in reality, the wing commander was calm and composed, the actor is anxious and scared. The ad is also slightly racist as they go overboard with dark make-up on the actor, hinting at the complexion.
IAF Wing Commander, Abhinandan Varthaman was captured on February 27 by the Pakistani army as his MiG-21 Bison plane was shot down in a dog fight between India and Pakistan. Varthaman ejected himself and landed in the Pakistan administered part of Kashmir, which was 7kms away from the Line Of Control. He had remained in custody for 60 hours before Pakistan Prime Minister released him as a “goodwill gesture.” -Nitasha Silesh
