Ocean’s Eight - By Sabrina Joshi

Ocean’s Eight, a Warner Bros. presentation, is the upcoming heist comedy and spin-off of director Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s trilogy (Ocean’s Eleven, Ocean’s Twelve, and Ocean’s Thirteen). The series portrays professional thieves banding together to score near impossible heists.

Directed by Gary Ross of The Hunger Games, Ocean’s Eight has a star-studded cast, with Sandra Bullock leading an all-female crime crew as Debbie Ocean, the estranged sister of legendary con man Danny Ocean (played by George Clooney in the Ocean’s trilogy). Also joining Bullock is Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Awkwafina, Mindy Kaling, and Sarah Paulson.

As the film unfolds, Debbie assembles her crew of specialists, endeavouring to pull off the heist of the century. Her plan is to steal a $150 million necklace at the Met Gala, New York City’s most grandiose, annual fashion event of the year. The stunning jewels are to be worn by celebrity Daphne Kluger (Anne Hathaway), as she takes centre stage at the ball.

Ocean’s Eight has an A-list roster of cameos, including Kim Kardashian West, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Dakota Fanning, Matt Damon, Anna Wintour, Olivia Munn, Katie Holmes, Zayn Malik, Zac Posen, Adriana Lima and Serena Williams. Late night talk-show host, James Corden, has a key supporting role in the film as the insurance investigator who begins to grow suspicious of the group as the film evolves.

The Ocean’s series started with the release of Ocean’s Eleven (2001), a remake of the 1960 film of the same name. The original film stars the five infamous Las Vegas Rat Pack, Frank Sinatra, Deal Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop.

The Ocean’s trilogy has been cited as defining its genre, leading to the success and commercialisation of heist films throughout the world. Ocean’s Eight hits theatres on June 8 and is estimated to make $30 million in its opening weekend.
