Making It Happen - Kavita Bhartia talks with you & I

Her understated elegance and kindness are her most striking qualities. Kavita is the name behind one of India’s leading multi-brand stores, Ogaan, which is the go-to store for women who love Indian fashion. She also has an eponymous brand that specialises in clothes made using traditional Indian textiles intermingled with contemporary cuts. What truly makes Kavita stand out, though, is her ever-present grace and humility.

At a time when few women in India were career-oriented, how did it feel to be a working woman?
It was just what I wanted. Once you start walking on the path, it’s such a positive one to walk on, because an empty mind is a devil’s workshop. It was the best thing that happened to me. When you start working you get better organised, and hence I was always busy. I never had time for idle lunches. It is a more wholesome life overall, a more productive one.

What is your personal style like?
I am a simple dresser with a twist. I like to dress in my own way and not follow any trend per se. It is nice to make your own style statement.

What does style mean to you?
For me, style is keeping it as simple as possible, but it’s something that comes naturally – something that you’re comfortable in. It is important to have fun with clothes.

Who are some of the designers you love wearing?
I love all the Japanese designers – Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamammoto, and I also love DKNY.

How do you manage to strike the right balance between work and family in today’s busy world?
It all flows once you make up your mind to do something. Multi-tasking is important, and we women are good at it. Once you take that step, it all somehow happens.

If there were one piece of advice you could give your 30-year-old self, what would it be?
Follow your dreams and do what you want to do to make it happen. Do not look back no matter what. Whether it is marriage or children, never stop for anything; keep going! The most important thing is to make it happen non-stop. Work is something that keeps you going when you’re down; it sees you through highs and lows and makes you a better human being, it keeps you balanced.

What are your other hobbies and passions?
I love to workout, whether in the gym or even just a walk. I love to travel and spend time with my family.   – as told to Suneela
