Kavita Golechha

The founder of Nritya Kala Academy, Kavita is a dancer par excellence. She has been learning classical dance since early childhood under the guidance of Guru Utsa Banerjee, later pursuing a Master’s in classical dance from the Akhil Bhartiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya. Since moving to Hyderabad after marriage, she has trained under Gandham Prakash and won several awards for excellence in Kathak.
Her dance academy, established close to 15 years ago, helps students prepare for the all-India dance exams at different levels. She has composed various dance-dramas such as ‘Jal Bin Machli’, ‘Pratishodh’, and ‘Kishanji Ke Navras’. She was also the first to do a shadow dance with renowned poet Iqbal Patni, where the performance was based on mudras and actions in shadow forms, set to his collection of poetry titled ‘Tasveer Ki Awaaz’.
Having introduced Hyderabad to Sufi Kathak set to the lyrics of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s ‘Aaafreen’, Kavita also choreographed a beautiful composition titled ‘Fashion Nritya’ with renowned models at the Falaknuma Palace, during the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Theatre and dance have always been the best forms of recreation for her, and she enjoys putting the two together. According to Kavita, Indian classical dances are dance-dramas where dancers act out a story through their gestures – making them more special is their connection with Hindu mythology.
