Google doodle celebrates the 133rd birth anniversary of renowned social reformer, Padma Bhushan and medical practitioner, Dr Muthulakshmi Reddi.
Muthulakshmi was born in Tamil Nadu. In the year 1907, she enrolled in the Madras medical college, where she received numerous prizes and gold medals for demonstrating brilliant academic performance. In the year 1927, She was appointed to the Madras Legislative council. She was the woman behind the establishment of equality and removal of social abuses for women in work places. She was the first woman legislator in British India, the first woman house surgeon in the Government maternity and Ophthalmic Hospital. Muthulakshmi Reddi is also the first chairperson of the State Social Welfare Advisory Board and the first woman Deputy President of the Legislative council. Muthulakshmi Reddi co-founded the Women's Indian Association. She was a firm believer and follower of Mahatma Gandhi's reforms for Independence.
