Four Must-Watch TV Dramas

Since the arrival of numerous entertainment streaming services, there have been mass amounts of great television shows for fans to view. These countless options can make deciding what to watch rather difficult. Here are four dramas that offer compelling and entertaining storylines that are worth binge-watching.

Big Little Lies

The critically acclaimed series, Big Little Lies, based on a novel by Liane Moriarty, follows the complicated lives of three mothers in an affluent beach town in Monterey, California. At its heart, it is a murder mystery, with the details of the event being uncovered through the stories of these mothers, portrayed by Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, and Shailene Woodley. Big Little Lies showcases a beautiful pastel community with smiling families, stunning homes, and breathtaking beach vistas. However, as the show progresses, this alluring facade melts away to reveal a world filled with jealousy, betrayal, infidelity, and dark secrets.

The drama series was originally set to be a seven episode mini-series, but due to its incredible success, HBO has renewed the show for a second season, with Hollywood legend Meryl Streep signing on to the project. Big Little Lies is sure to continue awing audiences with its gorgeous cinematography, incredible acting, and riveting plot lines.

The Affair

The Affair elegantly draws the portrait of infidelity by depicting the emotional trauma of an extramarital relationship. Dominic West stars as Noah Solloway, a school teacher and a novelist, living a relatively happy life in New York City with his wife, Helen (Maura Tierney), and their four children. While Noah and his family are summering at his in-law’s home in the Hamptons, Noah has an affair with a married waitress, Alison Lockhart (Ruth Wilson), resulting in devastating consequences for all.

The story is told from Noah’s and Alison’s independent perspectives, resulting in two different interpretations of the same events. It demonstrates how men and women can view the same emotional and physical entanglements so contrarily. The Affair returns for its fifth and final season in 2019.

Ozark, a Netflix series, tells the story of Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman), a financial adviser who is involved in laundering money for a Mexican drug cartel. When the laundering scheme goes awry, Byrde walks away indebted to the cartel, promising to launder $8 million by summer’s end. Byrde uproots his wife and two kids from their comfortable life in Chicago, to the Missouri Ozarks, where he believes he can remain below the Fed’s radar. However, he underestimates the enormous task at hand, as the cartel continues to demand more money and the locals attempt to derail Byrde’s operation. In order to survive, Marty has no other choice but to meet his stringent deadline and also rekindle his broken marriage in order to keep his family safe. With a storyline parallel to Breaking Bad, Ozark features an average guy struggling to protect his family.

The Night Manager

Based on John le Carré’s novel, The Night Manager is an action-packed British spy drama, starring Tom Hiddleston as Jonathan Pine, a former British soldier turned night manager at a luxury hotel in Cairo, Egypt. Pine comes into possession of confidential documents concerning illegal weapons trades and chemical warfare. Once he turns them into the International Enforcement Agency in London, he is then recruited by an intelligence officer, Angela Burr (Olivia Colman). She is investigating Richard Onslow Roper (Hugh Laurie), a corrupt businessman with ties to illegal arms trading. To bring down Roper, Pine goes undercover, infiltrating the inner circle of Roper’s organisation. However, Jonathan’s job gets complicated when he develops feelings for Roper’s girlfriend, Jed (Elizabeth Debicki). This exciting six-part miniseries received 36 nominations and won 11 awards, including three Golden Globes.
