Dr. Ananda Shankar Jayant

One of India’s most eminent and renowned classical dancers, choreographers and dance scholars, Dr. Jayant’s life in dance has seen her transcend the physical, leading her audience on spiritual and ethereal journeys. She performs two classical styles of dance, Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi, and is known for giving the technique and grammar of her dance a sparkling quality that bristles with life. Her natural grace and verve draw her audience into the vivid and vibrant canvas of her performance, leaving them deeply touched. Dr. Jayant, who dances with joy, has polished her art to a fine pitch; the rigour of her training, dedication and commitment meet a finely tuned intellect that effortlessly bridges traditional structures with contemporary inputs.
 A prolific solo and ensemble performer, as well as a beloved teacher and critically acclaimed choreographer, Dr. Jayant is the artistic director of Shankarananda Kalakshetra, a premier institution for classical music and dance, where she leads an ensemble of excellent dancers and musicians who have performed to packed audiences across continents. Her acclaimed body of work covers rich mythologies, historical chronicles and searing commenta ries on topical issues that constantly stretch the boundaries of artistic endeavour.
Dr. Jayant was awarded the Padma Shri in 2007 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Puraskar for Bharatanatyam in 2009. She has been honoured with the Kalaimamani by the Tamil Nadu government and the Kala Ratna from Andhra Pradesh.
