Depression: How can you help your loved ones deal with it?

Depression, thankfully a lot of people know what that means and why it is important to talk about it. But, unfortunately there are still a lot of people who do not understand the idea. Well, they are not to be blamed; it’s the education system and the society that never focused on mental well being. We often don’t know how to initiate conversations, and when someone opens up we don’t know what to do. We lay a few steps that you can take, if you see your loved ones going through such a phase.

Suno…Suno…Suno
That’s right, it’s the first and foremost step you need to take if you intent to help someone. What you need to understand is, when someone opens up to you, it takes them hell of courage to do that. Do not cut their words by saying “zayada mat soch,” “sab theek ho jayega” or “depression jaisa kuch nahi hota”. So listen. Pay all your attention to them, so that they can seek confidence in you, no matter what the situation is, and no matter how low and lost they feel.

Be a Helping Hand
Now, you need to let them know that you are there for them. You are ready to help in whatever way they need. This will not reduce their suffering but will definitely give them the support to work on their mental well-being. And most importantly turn them to a counselor. Let them know how important it is.

Tiny Steps
When they start talking to a counselor, the counselor will most certainly give them assignments and tasks that’ll help them unfold the threads in their mind. Now, what you can do is, give them a little push to work on those. Make sure to not force yourself on them, just a small friendly motivation will do. If there is some activity that the counselor suggests them to do with friends, tag along so that they don’t feel left out.

Give them Space
You don’t have to always talk to them about depression; give them some space from that and try to initiate other conversations that make them happy or invest in other activities that rejuvenate them. There will be days, when they’ll need space from all of it, do not hesitate to do not. Keep checking on them but also give them the space they need.
