Things are changing so rapidly on a daily basis globally from International travel bans, to entire industries closing down (The NBA, NYC’s Broadway, School closures) with more and more quarantine areas being set up. It seems every few minutes our phones blow up with new announcements, policies, procedures and regulations to follow.
With so many conspiracy theories circulating regarding the origin of COVID-19, including the implementation and roll out of 5G in Wuhan, China where the virus originated to coinciding as a possible way to deal with global overpopulation, one is left scratching their head in disbelief trying to sort out fact from fiction.
The reality and the fact is that COVID-19 is undoubtedly upon us. Additionally, as Dad predicted everything changes and in these days it is moment to moment. Just as I write these words, the inevitable announcement flashed across my screen - The New York City School System, the largest in school system in America is now officially closed.
As I started writing this article there was much talk about testing in fact, that's really all we heard about - how America was experiencing a lack of test kits and that people were being refused testing - that was last week. However, it seems things have changed with the US state and federal governments having implemented programs that guarantee enough tests. Ostensibly now,there are enough test kits yet, here's my question … If one is symptomatic and gets tested with a positive result … There is no talk of a cure. What does one do next? Wait it out until the virus passes through your system? Yes, of course, you will be quarantined or self-quarantine. Yet, if there is technically no cure and if one tests positive what does one do next? Hope your immune system is strong enough to pull you through? I personally know someone who contracted COVID-19. She is a female in her mid 40’s and she made it to the other side and herimmune system is now much stronger as a result. Yet, there is also talk now of there being two different strains of COVID-19 and I’ve heard various experts say that you can not get the virus again. So if there are two different strains, in my mind it is extremely plausible to contract one, hopefully recover but then contract the other strain. I know this because I believe that happened to me.
We know the virus is spread through the breath, and other mucous membranes including the eyes, nose and even the ears. It also seems to be passed through feces. There may be other yet unknown routes of contagion. According to Lancet, the incubation period is 24 days. The life of the virus on surfaces is up to 9 days. The newest information is that it is not as deadly as either SARS or MERS. And, finally, you do not need to show symptoms to have contracted the virus; patients who test positive for it often have no symptoms. Which ostensibly means one can be an asymptomatic carrier of COVID-19 and be spreading the virus.
The cellular mechanism of the virus appears to be that the virus enters the cell, and once inside the cell, releases its RNA into the cell cytoplasm. The normal cell machinery is then hijacked, and more viruses are produced. An enzyme called 3CL (3-chymotripsin-like protease) is released, and this enzyme attacks the cells’ defenses against the coronavirus inhibitors.
Additionally, once on the other side and fully recovered, one should heed caution in going back out into society as it could take another 10 days to two weeks for the virus to shed. In other words, you may feel like a new person and chomping on the bit to go out, yet chances are you are still highly contagious.
South Korea recently announced that it has successfully treated coronavirus patients using oxygen. Unlike the US, where patients are most often treated with pharmaceuticals, Korea, like India is more open to natural therapies. Jeong Eun-Kyeong, director of Korea’s CDC announced that only one of South Korea’s 21 remaining coronavirus patients is still ill. All others have been released.
The most common symptoms people have been reporting for COVID-19 are:
- Fever (99ºF-104ºF)

- Aching muscles (myalgia)
