How did you get into fitness?
I used to live a typical corporate life with a well paid job and have been working out since I was 16 years old. Previously into sports, I developed a strong liking towards strength training and have been a regular gym goer since. I was curious to know the actual science behind the exercise physiology and nutrition so I underwent a personal training certification and then went on to do a few more certifications including certified group instructor, certified boot camp instructor, certified circuit training instructor, sports conditioning coach, and certified spinning instructor. The decision wasn’t easy to make as I had a secure job in London. But my inner instincts were quite strong and I finally made the decision to completely change my career into fitness.

How did the collaboration with Kris Gethin happen?
I’ve been following Kris Gethin online for a long time and had a brief meeting with him in London too, but I never really thought I would partner with him.He is not like the usual trainers you see. He does actually walk the talk and is known for his transformations across the globe. He came into the limelight in India after transforming Hrithik Roshan and a few other Bollywood celebs and now has millions of followers worldwide.

When I heard they wanted to open franchise gyms in India,
I contacted them and after a series of meetings, we finalised the partnership. Hyderabad was the first city to house a premium Kris Gethin Gym in India. It is equipped with world class equipment and a great ambience.

What is the USP of the gym?
Mind and body transformation, educating the clients about the right way of training complemented with nutrition. We have a unique collection of Hammer Strength machines in the
gym— with 23 Hammer Strength Stations. Ours is the only gym in India with this kind of a range. These machines are bio-mechanically manufactured and are very effective and safe.

What are the biggest mistakes people make when it comes to health and fitness?
Nutrition and recovery play a key role to fuel the performance. The right amount of food and correct form of food helps you carve the body you desire. People try to make quick fixes and miss looking at it as a healthy lifestyle change. They opt for crash calorie cutting, which is not a healthy approach. A longer term lifestyle change in your diet and workout will lead you to a fitter body and life.

What are the few changes people should make to improve their fitness levels?

  • Eat sensibly
  • Eat with a purpose
  • Set short term but practical goals
  • Don’t go for quick fixes
  • Do not expect too many changes in a short time.
  • Try and eat clean as much as you can, you are bound to have food cravings which are normal. Allow yourself to indulge once in a while but get back to eating clean.
  • Sleeping well, at the right time, and for six to seven hours every night is key.
  • Keep your workout going, be it at the gym, zumba or jogging. Physical workout should never stop.

You also train several sportspersons and celebrities. What’s that like?
Quite a few elite sports personalities come to Kris Gethin Gyms, including Sania Mirza, Mohd Azharuddin, Jwala Gutta, Saketh Myneni, and Pragyan Ojha. I have been giving personal training to Tollywood superstar Mahesh Babu and Namrata Shirodkar for over a year too. Training Mahesh Babu has been great, mainly because of his discipline and interest in nutrition and fitness.

Who do you think is the fittest in Bollywood and Tollywood?
According to me, Akshay Kumar is definitely one of the most fit actors. He has always been into fitness in some form or the other, hence looks great at his age. Hrithik Roshan has also shown a tremendous transformation before and after his injury. Tiger Shroff is another actor who has a perfectly fit body.

In Tollywood, it would have to be Mahesh Babu for his lean muscle look that he achieved in a natural and healthy way.     – as told to Suneela
