Actress Anne Hathaway may have looked pleased during her Best Supporting Actress win at the 2013 Academy Awards, but inside she was anything but happy.
“I felt very uncomfortable,” the 33-year-old told The Guardian in a new interview published on Thursday, October 20. “I kind of lost my mind doing that movie and it hadn’t come back yet. Then I had to stand up in front of people and feel something I don’t feel which is uncomplicated happiness.”
The mother to 6-month-old Jonathan says she tried to hide her true emotions when accepting the award on stage in 2013 but it didn’t work.
“I tried to pretend that I was happy and I got called out on it, big time,” says Hathaway who faced criticism at the time for her phony demeanor on stage. “That’s the truth and that’s what happened. It sucks.”
She said she overcame the backlash that followed.
“What you learn from it is that you only feel like you can die from embarrassment, you don’t actually die,” she says.
