American Made

Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman from the Edge of Tomorrow are set to reunite in upcoming film American Made which is based on a true and riveting story of a hustler and pilot, who was recruited by the CIA to run one of the biggest covert operations in the US history. The film details the outrageous exploits of Barry Seal (Tom Cruise) and his journey from a respectable TWA pilot to a legendary drug and gun smuggler.

Seal’s loving wife, Lucy (Sarah Wright Olsen), watches his transition from a TWA pilot to a major player in one of modern history’s greatest scandals. Seal’s infamous association with the Colombian Medellin drug cartel, his role in the Iran-contra affair, and the trading of arms for hostages made him well-known in the drug underworld as well as in the US Security Agencies. He made a fortune by smuggling crates full of AK-47s for the US government, and kilos of cocaine for Colombian drug lords, without either side knowing about these dealings. His illegal operations with the CIA meant he was able to get in and out of the country without detection, allowing him to successfully carry out these missions. Seal’s opportunism made him one of the wealthiest men in America in the 1980’s.
Cruise was intrigued by his role, as he has never had the opportunity to play a character as diverse and unique as Seal. In reality, Barry Seal would fly his small plane on 10-hour flights to Columbia to do these gun/drug-runs. Cruise, an accomplished pilot, was up to this challenge. He did all of his own flying in the movie, and even flew to Colombia himself. Like Seal, Cruise flew at very low altitudes, which required a high skill level.

Doug Liman has been itching to tell Seal’s story for a long time and his prowess as a filmmaker and storyteller will certainly do this incredibly exciting story justice.
