Musskan Agarwal talks with You & I
Young and dynamic jewellery designer Musskan Agarwal talks to You & I about how she came to start her own brand, “Kiwi by Musskan Agarwal”. It seems she always knew that jewellery design was what she was cut out for – after all, it’s in her blood too!
Tell us a little about yourself.
I am a very happy person and take life as it comes. I am an avid arts enthusiast with a yen for jewellery design. After graduation, I went on to earn my master’s from the Indian Institute of Gems and Jewellery and opened my very first retail store in Delhi – “Proroyal Kiwi By Musskan”. For me, my family comes first; without their support, I would have got nowhere. They have been my strength in everything I have done. Of course, it has helped that I am friendly and a go-getter.
How did you get into jewellery design?
Jewellery design is in my blood. My father started a line in Jaipur – mainly cutting and polishing pure emeralds, rubies and sapphires. I had no plans to get into the trade, though I had always been fond of designing jewellery and wearing it myself. But now I am wholeheartedly into it, and it is the motivation and the knowledge passed on by my parents that have led me where I am today.
What inspired you to start your brand?
Every woman has become trendy in some way or another, and for many women, jewellery is their first love. As times have changed, the younger generation has definitely developed a taste for jewellery that fits into their budget as well. I could never have imagined that I would be handling my own jewellery store one day, where each piece is created according to my taste. I enjoy making my customers wear “my kind of jewellery”.
And what does your brand comprise?
My label “Kiwi by Musskan Aggarwal” is all about the dazzling array of fashion apparel for just about every woman – from the daring, the dynamic, the dignified, the discerning, to the downright difficult! With an accent on feminism, my creations signify youth, glamour and sophistication. The product range comprises a large variety of neckpieces, earrings, rings, bracelets and everything you can think of when it comes to fashion jewellery. And the styles range from the casually smart to the ornately formal, lending a stunning colour sensibility.
What would you say is your signature style in jewellery design?
My collections have a lot of Indian earthiness and connect to culture and religion. That apart, Tanjore miniature painting informs the design in my neckpieces. The Tanjore paintings have always been very contemporary, and the colours and kinds of strings I use can be worn with both Indian and Western outfits. Painting on a small piece of stone is slightly tough, since it requires intricacy and a steady hand. The Tanjore line is totally hand-painted using 14k gold foil and real Swarovskis.
What is “Kiwi by Musskan” looking at next?
I live in the present and am very content with what I am today. However, for the future I would want my brand to be known as among the best contemporary designer brands, not only in India but across the globe as well.
Trends change over time. Do you follow what’s in vogue or do you follow your own path?
My experimental nature makes me different from other designers. Every collection of mine has been different from the previous one. I design for today’s women who are not afraid to experiment. Right from bold Tanjore, to funky spectacles to neon jewellery, and bold animal-themed jewellery, I have always tried to incorporate and blend the best of both worlds –the Indian and the international. My willingness to venture into the unknown and take risks is my USP. I observe people closely and also travel a lot. I adopt different sensibilities and then create something that makes a fashion statement.
What is your personal sense of style?
I love dressing myself up – creating my own fashion statement and wearing something not very predictable. For example, teaming solid plane silhouettes with bold jewellery is something that I really like. I am a shopaholic and especially go for bags in a variety of shades and from different sources – from streetside to the upper-end stores.
What do you do apart from work?
I enjoy reading fiction, and am keen on photography. I also enjoy spending time with my dog Euro!
What’s a must-have jewellery piece that’s right for any occasion?
A bold neckpiece or a statement ring is something I feel every fashionista should have. They are perfect for all occasions.
