Teenage actor Tom Holland, best known for starring in "Billy Elliot the Musical", has been cast as the new Spider-Man.
Holland will become the third actor to play Spider-Man in a big budget motion picture, following in the footsteps of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. The new Spider-Man movie will be a collaboration between Marvel Studios and Sony and will be directed by Jon Watts.
Holland, who co-starred with Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor in tsunami drama “The Impossible”, was one of six teenage actors being considered for the role. The studio and producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal were impressed by Holland’s performances in The Impossible, “Wolf Hall,” and the upcoming “In the Heart of the Sea”.
“Sony, Marvel, Kevin and I all knew that for Peter Parker, we had to find a vibrant, talented young actor capable of embodying one of the most well-known characters in the world," Sony Executive Amy Pascal told Marvel.com With Tom, we’ve found the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man’s story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
He’ll first appear in “Captain America: Civil War”, and then will take center stage in a solo film set for 2017.
