During pregnancy, every woman finds it difficult to decide whether to continue or to stop taking antidepressants. Taking antidepressants increase the risk of birth defects. A recent study from the Université de Montréal in the British medical journal shows that during pregnancy, women who take antidepressants are at 6-10% risk of having a baby with birth defects as compared to a 3-5% chance in women who do not take antidepressants.
For the pregnant mother and the baby, the first trimester is very critical since it is the time when the organ system starts to develop. When expecting mothers are put on antidepressant pills during this time frame there are high chances of interfering with serotonin intake by the fetus, which can result in malformations in the baby. There have been a lot of cases of pregnant mothers, especially the ones who live alone, older and have no financial support from their partners suffering from depression. Doctors have been prescribing antidepressants to cope up with depression. But a lot of people are not aware of the fact that these can harm the mother and the baby. An antidepressant is not the only solution to deal with depression there are other ways in which expected mothers could tackle this serious problem.
Tips for pregnant mothers to cope with depression-
• Instead of taking medicines, pregnant mothers should regularly exercise as this will help them to relax.
• Consult a good psychotherapist who can help expecting mothers to cope with the problems that they are facing.
• Light therapy, in which expecting mothers are exposed to light for a certain period of time to help relieve depression symptoms.
• The old Chinese tradition of acupuncture involves placing tiny needles into various parts of the body as this will uplift the mood.
