Sisters in Arms - Shradha and Sumridhi Ganeriwala talk with You & I

Sisters Shradha and Sumridhi are the best models for their own jewellery line – Kiara Jewels. Together the duo design contemporary and quirky jewellery for the woman of today who epitomises elegance, grace and charisma. The brand was co-founded by the two sisters who seem poles apart, but work together with great synergy. We must admit that their youthful energy is truly infectious. Although they’ve only been in the business for a short time, their brand has already been adorned by a host of celebrities, including Neha Dhupia, Sonal Chauhan, Rakul Preet Singh, Trisha Krisnan, Sania Mirza, and P.V. Sindhu.

Where do you get your inspiration from?
It’s actually everywhere! We draw inspiration while travelling to various places. The religious diversity in India and the distinct cultural divides between various regions globally also inspire us. The world is our canvas, and the process of designing is so endless that it’s fun to break loose and let the creativity take over.

How has the response been so far?
The response has indeed been overwhelming; this, in fact, acts as a major driving force at our workplace. For a start-up like ours, which has been in the market for only a few months, we are happy that our work has been appreciated and loved. By no means has it been easy, but it’s been worth the effort. The most gratifying part of this is when, at the end of the day, you find a lady smiling at herself while trying on the jewellery that you have created; that’s our best reward.

What’s next for Kiara Jewels?
We are still at a nascent stage and have a long way to go. We intend to make the distribution of this brand much stronger in terms of geographies. Kiara stands for an individualistic charisma and the design creations that cater to folks with a style statement of their own.

What do you girls enjoy doing when you are not working?
We both love to learn about different cultures, and we travel as much as possible. Also, because ‘together time’ is so important, every Sunday we sit down as a family and enjoy a leisurely dinner.

What is it like to work together as sisters and partners?
Shradha: Working with my sister is like working with the other half of me; we complement each other well. For instance, Sumridhi can see the creation of an idea, whereas I’m a logistics kind of girl. Sisters can be real with one another in a way they can’t be with a friend or co-worker. But we think it has really helped us understand that when we are at work, we are business partners and can’t see each other as sisters. Otherwise, our workspace could easily become catty. We have to see each other as partners, that we are always in this together – and not against each other.

What is your favourite jewellery trend?
Shradha: I like jewellery that’s sleek and modern, yet vintage-inspired or ornate and jewel-toned.

Sumridhi: I absolutely love body jewellery; this trend focuses on jewellery that’s worn in unexpected places or in unexpected ways. Body chains, hand chains, arm bands are some pieces I really like.

How did the idea to start a jewellery brand come about?
We were contemplating this idea for a while after receiving appreciation for our designs and personal style statements in the past. Realising that there would never be a best time to take the plunge, we decided to dive straight into it. We kicked off operations and created a jewellery brand that could stand on its own. Honestly, at the start, we began Kiara thinking all about the product side of things, and not the business side of things. But now we know that they’re two halves of one whole.       – as told to Suneela
