One Direction are to split in March 2016 for at least a year as they pursue solo projects.
They will not be touring their fifth album, which is to be released at Christmas.
A source told The Sun: “The guys have been together for five years, which is an incredible run for any boyband. They fully deserve to have at least a year to work on their own projects. There is absolutely no bad blood between them and they are all 100 per cent behind the decision.”
Rumours have been rife for a while that the band could be set to split but they continued to tour after Zayn left the group and Liam thanked fans for "not thinking it's finished". Back in March, the X-Factor U.K. alum announced that he was leaving the group in hopes of being a "normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight."
“This was the plan with or without Zayn,” the source added. “In fact, the band have been making amazing music and been incredibly happy without Zayn. Of course they would have preferred that he had stayed in the band, but they would have taken this extended hiatus even if he hadn’t left.”
The announcement comes just days after the group released their new music video for "Drag Me Down." So many fans flocked to watch the clip online that Vevo ultimately crashed. "Drag Me Down" also was the first music video made since Zayn Malik quit the band.
The news of the 'split' also comes after it was revealed Louis is expecting his first child with Los Angeles-based stylist Briana Jungwirth.
