Oil Essentials

An essential oil is one that occurs naturally, usually extracted through the process of distillation. They obtain distinct odours characteristic to the plant or flower of origin. Essential oils have many uses, the most common among these being aromatherapy. You’ve probably seen diffusers at a number of places. These devices use a few drops of essential oil to completely change the aroma of a space, and these scents have different effects on people. From calming the mind to alleviating your mood, essential oils can work wonders.

Essential oils are also a great way to improve your home and health. With correct use, they can improve the health of your hair, skin and nails. They’re also used to treat a number of skin-related ailments like fungus and acne. When it comes to the household, essential oils can also be used to fix things, and make a number of concoctions that are extremely useful to the house.

An important thing to know while using essential oils is how strong they are. Most pure ones are much more concentrated than the item it’s derived from – up to 70 times more! This is why it’s not recommended to allow direct contact with the skin, and that’s where carrier oils come in. If you have ever come across a recipe or remedy that uses essential oils, you’ve probably read about carrier oils, which dilute a concentrated essential oil, to make it milder and more effective. Carrier oils are also referred to as base oils.
