He is one of the best fashion exports of South Asia to America and has famously made it to the very top echelons of the fashion world – Prabal Gurung , the Nepali designer who was born and raised in Kathmandu, moved to Mumbai to study Hotel Management, after which he moved to Delhi to study at NIFT. He then apprenticed with Manish Arora, before moving to Melbourne to assist a few stylists.
It was in America, the land of dreams, that Gurung had his first taste of success. In 1999, he moved to NYC where he interned with Donna Karan while attending the prestigious Parsons School of Design. This was followed by successful stints at Cynthia Rowley and Bill Blass, before which he launched his own eponymous label during New York Fashion Week in February 2009.
Gurung’s designs have been made ultra famous since the First Lady of America, Michelle Obama has worn his creations multiple times. There have been a host of other high profile women who have worn his clothes like Priyanka Choprra, Oprah Winfrey, Scarlett Johansson, Kate Hudson and the Duchess of Cambridge among other.
Gurung is said to be coming to Mumbai soon to display his collection at Cecelia Morelli Parikh’s store Le Mill to meet with Mumbai’s swish set.
