A decade after the release of the 2008 hit musical comedy, “Mamma Mia!” The Movie, Universal Pictures brings the much-anticipated sequel, “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again”. The film is directed and written by Ol Parker, with Tom Hanks once again signing on as one of the executive producers. The sequel takes us back to the magical Greek island of Kalokairi, with people singing and dancing to many of the famous Abba hits of the seventies.
“Mamma Mia 2” follows Sophie, (Amanda Seyfried) who is living on Kalokairi, pregnant with Sky's (Dominic Cooper) child. She is determined to fulfil her mother’s (Donna, portrayed by Meryl Streep) dream of renovating the taverna and plans to transform it into a hotel. Sophie delves into her mother’s past with the help of Donna’s childhood friends, Tanya (Christine Baranski) and Rosie (Julie Walters). They reveal how Donna met Sophie’s three possible dads: Sam, Bill and Harry. The film switches back and forth in time and shows how Donna’s relationships forged in the past resonate in the present.
The sequel features the same star-studded cast, with Meryl Streep, Julie Walters, Christine Baranski, Amanda Seyfried, Dominic Cooper, Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgård and Colin Firth. Also joining the returning cast are Andy Garcia, Lily James (Downtown Abbey), portraying young Donna (Streep), and legendary singer, Cher, as Sophie’s dazzling grandmother.
“Mamma Mia!” was a major success with the American audience, and it was even a bigger hit at the international box office, grossing over $600 million globally. The popularity and fame of Abba cannot be underestimated when considering the enormous success of this franchise. “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” hits theatres on July 20, 2018, and is anticipated to deliver the same musical energy as the original blockbuster.
