Lionel Messi was at the centre of a headbutting controversy on Wednesday as Barcelona cruised to a 3-0 victory over Serie A side Roma in a pre-season friendly at the Camp Nou.
Lionel Messi and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa both received yellow cards after a heated exchange that saw the Barcelona No. 10 head-butt and grab the throat of the Roma defender.
Barcelona were 1-0 up in the first half when the clash occurred. As play stopped at the edge of Barcelona's attacking area, Yanga-Mbiwa leaned his head in towards the Argentine. A furious Messi responded with a headbutt and then grabbed Yanga-Mbiwa by the throat after clashing with the defender before other players rushed over to intervene.
Messi scored the game's second goal seven minutes later. Barcelona went up 3-0 in the 66th minute behind Ivan Rakitic's goal.
