With the modern world average life span being between 70-85 years, just the thought of a human being living over 100 years is quite astonishing. One of the most unusual cases that have been documented is about a Chinese herbalist, marital artist and tactical advisor, Li Ching-Yuen who could have lived either 256 or 197 years. According to Wikipedia “He claimed to be born in 1736, while disputed records suggest 1677. Both claimed lifespans of 197 and 256 years, far exceeding the longest confirmed lifespan of 122 years and 164 days of the French woman Jeanne Calment. His true date of birth was never determined and his claims have been dismissed by gerontologists as a myth”.
For almost 40 years Li Ching- Yuen survived on a diet rich in herds such as Lingzhi, Goji berry, wild Ginseng, He Shoo Wu, Gotu Kola and rice wine. He consumed a diet full of wild plants and fruits along with fish and occasionally wild meat. Li Ching-Yuen gave a few words of advice to military commander Wu Pei-fu, who took Li into his house to learn more about longevity, he said “Keep a quiet heart, sit like a tortoise, walk sprightly like a pigeon and sleep like a dog”. Not only Li’s diet but also his inward calm and peace of mind along with breathing techniques helped him to live a long life.
Li Ching-Yuen secret to longevity:
• Choose a healthy diet- in order to live a healthy and long life one must consume foods that are high in antioxidants such as muesli, goji berries, blueberries, walnuts, cocoa nibs, fruits and green leafy vegetables.
• One must avoid consuming sugary desserts, genetically modified foods, fatty meats, no alcohol and no tobacco. One must avoid processed foods. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is key to lead a healthy and a long life.
• Meditation and breathing techniques- Along with eating a healthy diet it is very important to regularly practice few breathing techniques and meditation which have been proven to cure physical, mental and emotional health problems.
• Along with proper diet, getting adequate sleep is equally important to maintain a healthy lifestyle. On average 7 to 8 hours of sleep is required.
