The Greatest Showman - Movie Review

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, let’s get ready to watch The Greatest Showman, starring Hugh Jackman as the legendary P.T. Barnum, founder of the famous Barnum & Bailey Circus. Director Michael Gracey shares this true rags-to-riches story about Barnum’s journey from a poor tailor’s son, to becoming one of the greatest showmen in American history.

Before Barnum acquired fame and fortune, he married his childhood sweetheart, Charity (Michelle Williams), who was the strength and motivation behind his success. As Charity came from a wealthy, upper-class family, Barnum was determined to provide an abundant life for her. For his first business venture, he buys a museum of wax figurines, which proved to be a financial disaster. Barnum finds success when he replaces the dull attractions with a show featuring human oddities: a bearded lady, giant, conjoined twins, and many others. The film also stars Zac Efron as Barnum’s business partner, Phillip Carlyle, and Zendaya as Anne Wheeler, the daring trapeze artist with whom Phillip falls in love.

To be accepted by high society, Barnum decides to promote the renowned Swedish opera singer, Jenny Lind (Rebecca Ferguson), in the United States by organising a nationwide tour. However, Ms Lind’s infatuation with Barnum causes a public scandal, threatening the relationships he held most dear.

Set in the mid-1800s, The Greatest Showman is an extravagant musical that tells the story of a master showman who gave the world a spectacle it had never seen before—the circus. Oscar and Golden Globe winning songwriters,

Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, add a modern twist to this century-old tale through pop tunes and glamorous dances.

The Greatest Showman has already received three Golden Globe nominations, including Best Motion Picture for Musical or Comedy. This captivating film with sensational music gives the audience a breath-taking cinematic experience that is not to be missed.
