Traditionally the most fabulous film festival of the year, the Cannes Film Festival recently celebrated its 70th year at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès in Cannes, France. The prestigious event – which honours the art of movie making by showcasing films from different genes around the world – featured celebrities descending the red carpet flaunting the most glamorous outfits.
Leading ladies from world cinema – including Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Araya Alberta Hargate, Sonam Kapoor, Liya Kebede, Eva Longoria and Naomi Campbell – dazzled the crowds in outfits from top-notch designers. Here’s a roundup of the 10-day festival’s fantastic fashion scene.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan looked like a princess in a floor-sweeping outfit by Dubai-based Filipino fashion designer, Micheal Cinco. The powder blue off-shoulder gown from the designer’s Dream of Versailles Fall 2017 collection had a deep plunging neckline, which was firmly held at the waist and flowed into a lovely ballroom gown. The former Miss World kept it subtle yet classy with a simple hairdo, minimal makeup, and no accessories.
Bollywood’s very own fashionista Sonam Kapoor made heads turn at the screening of the film The Killing of a Sacred Deer, in a glittery gold Elie Saab figure-hugging gown. Cinched at the waist with a thin gold belt, it featured a low neckline that accentuated her figure. Shimmery gold smoky eyes and gold-and-nude lips, along with her silky centre parted hair complemented her fabulous outfit. Sonam paired this with a gold clutch and a statement ring from Chopard.
Pop sensation Rihanna looked marvellous at the premiere of Okja in an impressive custom-made white ballroom gown from Christian Dior, which was teamed with an off-shoulder white taffeta cape. She paired the ensemble with exquisite emerald earrings, rings, and a cuff bracelet along with trendy Andy Wolf Eyewear sunglasses.
Deepika Padukone looked ethereal as she walked down the red carpet as the global brand ambassador of L’Oreal Paris in a gorgeous emerald green Brandon Maxwell gown with a high slit that elevated her look. The stunning beauty teamed the outfit with Chloe Gosselin shoes and stunning diamond jewellery from DeGrisogono. Deepika’s green smoky eyes with a generous amount of mascara and hair in a high updo made her look like an absolute diva.
Araya Alberta Hargate, known as Chompoo, is a famous superstar in Thailand, and she was accompanied by her partner, Witsarut "Nott" Rungsisingpipat, at the premiere of 120 Beats Per Minute. She looked resplendent in a bustier princess gown from Zuhair Murad’s Spring 2017 couture collection, and the voluminous fuchsia gown also featured a huge bow. The actress looked ravishing as she paired the stunning outfit with Chopard’s charming diamond drop earrings.
Model Liya Kebede lit up the red carpet in a simple yet elegant metallic gold mesh outfit from Paco Rabanne’s Fall 2017 collection, at the premiere of 120 Beats Per Minute. Her fresh, lustrous skin with minimal eyeliner, and bob styled into soft curls was one of our favourites of this year’s Cannes red carpet looks.
Being one of the new brand ambassadors of L’Oreal Paris, Elle Fanning wore a pale green vintage tulle gown with a deep V-neck. Designed by Gucci, it had crystal leaf embroidery and
hand-painted pale yellow silk flowers all over. She also stood out at the Cannes opening ceremony in a custom-made, floor sweeping light powder pink Vivienne Westwood gown. The gorgeous garment
had a hand printed ‘Bird of Paradise’ design with her name on the train. She chose to keep her look minimal and sophisticated with nude tones, hair in a high bun, subtly lined eyes, and a matte lipstick. To finish off the look, the actress accessorised the outfit with a dainty ring from Tiffany & Co. and Christian Louboutin shoes.
Eva Longoria looked ravishing at the premiere of The Killing of a Sacred Deer in a lovely form-fitting sheer gown from Marchesa’s Pre-Fall 2017 collection. It featured floral embroidery and a plunging V-neckline. The actress opted for subtle smoky eyes with light pink lips, and paired the outfit with a pair of champagne diamond waterfall earrings and a ring from Lorraine Schwartz.
Julianne Moore swept the red carpet while attending the premiere of Okja in a scintillating black custom-made Louis Vuitton outfit that featured a high slit. The stunning actress accessorised the outfit with a splendid pair of 18-karat white gold earrings, featuring 34.12 carats of diamonds, from Chopard’s high jewellery collection.
Susan Sarandon stole the show at the opening ceremony in a velvet emerald green off-shoulder Alberta Ferretti custom-made gown with a high slit and a wide V-neckline. To finish off her age-defying look, the veteran actress sported nude makeup and hair in soft curls. The striking outfit was accessorised with a gorgeous pair of sapphire drop Chopard earrings and rings, classic black pumps, and a pair of oversized sunglasses.
Supermodels Kendall Jenner, Naomi Campbell, and Emily Ratajkowski created quite a stir at Cannes too. Kendall walked the red carpet in a lovely flowy Giambattista Valli Couture with leafy floral print and voluminous puffed sleeves. She rounded off the look with Jimmy Choo satin sandals along with a pair of sheer socks, and accessorised the appealing outfit with Colossal Chopard diamond earrings and a huge ring. Emily Ratajkowski looked alluring at the premiere of Loveless in a Peter Dundas black sheer lace jumpsuit with a voluminous tiered train. Her look was completed with Gianvito Rossi sandals. Naomi Campbell wowed the audience in a feather hemline black gown from Atelier Versace’s spring 2017 collection. The intricate Swarovski embellishment on the dress made her shine bright. Naomi chose to team the outfit with a statement necklace and a ring.
