First Hijab Wearing Model: Halima Aden

Just a week after she made her first appearance in Kanye West’s New York fashion show, 19 year old American model Halima Aden, who was born in Somali is making waves at the Milan Fashion Week 2017. Halima was the first model to compete for the title of Miss Minnesota USA wearing a hijab and burkini. In a recent interview  for FR Fashion book, David Bowie’s Widow Iman asked her about the importance of wearing hijab, when asked about the importance of wearing a hijab she said “I always tell (people), 'Just look around you, there are Muslim women who wear it and Muslim women who don't”. She further went on to say that “We have to break the stereotype. I think often the West does not understand the history and the privilege of wearing a hijab. They always think of oppression”.

The American model strongly believes that men in particular should not judge women who wear hijab because wearing a hijab is not an easy task; it comes with lot of responsibilities. Halima has lot of projects lined up back to back. Right after she made her Milan Fashion Week debut at Alberta Ferretti, she signed a contract with the IMG agency.

The charming 19 year old model who was seen walking the runway with popular models Gigi Hadid, Elsa Hosk, and Sara Sampaio conveys a message that the fashion industry is changing by embracing a more modern idea of femininity. Halima wants to focus on creating a unique name for herself in the fashion industry, her plan for the future is to become the brand Ambassador for UN goodwill and give something back to the society.
