The post went viral on Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms, with users passionately split over what color the dress really is blue with black lace, or white with gold lace. Within a half-hour, Caitlin McNeill, a 21-year-old singer and guitarist’s post of the picture attracted some 500 likes and shares. The photo soon migrated to Buzzfeed and Facebook and Twitter, setting off a social media conflagration that few were able to resist.
 
A viral debate on social media, which began Thursday night, continued Friday about whether a dress worn recently to a Scottish wedding was actually blue and black or white and gold. In just 24 hours, "dressgate", "whiteandgold", "the dress", and "What Colors Are This Dress" began trending on Twitter. Cyberspace was being consumed with people retweeting and instagraming the picture of dress and asking whether everyone was #teamwhiteandgold or #teamblueandblack.
 
Even celebrities took to thir social media pages to weigh in on the predicament.
 
"What color is that dress? I see white & gold. Kanye sees black & blue, who is color blind?" Kim Kardashian wrote on Twitter, on the debate raging in her household with rapper husband Kanye West.
 
"I don't understand this odd dress debate and I feel like it's a trick somehow, I'm confused and scared. PS it's OBVIOUSLY BLUE AND BLACK" pop diva Taylor Swift wrote in a message retweeted more than 90,000 times.
 
“And for everyone asking I see blue and black”, tweet singer Justin Bieber.
 
The question at hand, if you haven’t been asked it already, is what color is this dress, below? The results are remarkably divided. An informal Buzzfeed poll indicates that about 75 percent of people perceive it to be white and gold. The dress is made by Roman Originals' in England in reality is blue and black. A Roman spokesperson said the company’s sales are up 347% Friday compared to expectations as people come to look at the dress and end up shopping for other items as well.The dress in question sells for £50.00 ($77.13) and is available in three other color combinations, none of which are gold and white.
