Tania M. Kathuria talks with You & I

You founded TI Couture two years ago. Tell us about it.
TI Couture is a luxury jewellery brand born out of my sheer passion for statement jewellery. The initials stand for the name of my styling company, Trendy Innovations, as well as my maiden name, Tania Israni. The brand has something for everyone – from teenagers to ladies up to the age of 60. Our diverse range starts as low as Rs. 1,000 and goes up to Rs. 25,000. Apart from retailing my collections via several e-commerce portals, I also participate in exhibitions across the country.

After studying at institutions like Mater Dei Convent School and IILM, I pursued a master’s degree in entrepreneurship from the University of Nottingham. I always wanted to start my own business, and since I was quite inclined towards fashion, I decided to take this on. I was always quite fashion-conscious and loved to dress up, and every time I stepped out I would get compliments for my sense of style. After a lot of brainstorming, I created my styling firm, after which TI Couture came into being.

What does your job entail?
Fashion styling has a lot to do with building a personal image, which varies according to the kinds of outfits you opt for: formal, casual, party wear, etc. Everybody has different tastes and preferences, so I usually sit down with the client to understand what she’s looking for, so that I can try to offer a look that fits her comfort zone. As a fashion stylist, I design and put together looks for my clients from head to toe.

Where do you find inspiration?
My mother is a very creative person and was always my source of inspiration growing up. Her sense of fashion truly intrigues me. When designing jewellery, I draw inspiration from many things around me. It depends on the season, the current fashion scene, colours and different elements. I also draw inspiration from my travels. My latest collection is a vintage theme, so I’ve used a lot of pearls and semi-precious stones. My inspiration for this particular collection was Audrey Hepburn.

Tell us more about what you offer.
I make all kinds of fashion accessories – chandelier and stud earrings, long and short necklaces, headgear, ear cuffs, hand harnesses, body chains, rings and more. My brand has three ranges based on the element that is used: metal, silver and rose gold. I design jewellery based on these elements, adding other semi-precious materials like crystals and pearls.

How do you perceive fashion?
My personal style is chic and feminine. I love dressing up and I’m open to experimenting, but my look is always dependant on my mood. I love regular and maxi dresses. Comfort plays a very important role in the way I dress.

Anyone you idolise in the world of fashion?
Kareena Kapoor Khan and Sonam Kapoor! I love the way they dress and carry themselves.

If not this, what career path would you have chosen?
I’m not the kind to do a 9-5 job, so I’d definitely have my own business, something creative.

What are your other hobbies?
I’m fond of swimming and exercising, and I also love travelling.

What’s your favourite travel destination?
London!

What do you do in your free time?
I recently got married, so I’m currently juggling many things. When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my family and my pets. My parents, husband and in-laws are all very supportive. They push me to work hard.                                   ..... as told to Niharika
