Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. has begun offering delivery for online and mobile orders in 67 cities in the U.S. using the Postmates app. Postmates, which uses independent contractors who deliver food using their own cars, would be their official third-party delivery service.
Starbucks Corp., which plans to roll out delivery later this year, also chose Postmates as its third-party service.
The startup, which promises deliveries in 60 minutes or less, operates in 67 markets and in New York alone there are 29 Chipotle chains available for delivery.
It is not, however, cheap. The cost of delivery, which is based on distance, will start at $4.99 and go as high as $7.99 per order, according to a Postmates spokeswoman. "I just tried to order an $8 Chipotle burrito from Postmates and was told it would cost $20 with delivery and service fees," wrote Jason Del Rey on Re/Code.
On Friday, the chain also will launch a mobile app designed for the Apple Watch, Chief Creative and Development Officer Mark Crumpacker said during a conference call with investors. In recent months, the company has been working to boost its e-commerce business and mobile payment options, Crumpacker said.
