What: Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport
Who: For those who want more power
Why: Press a button, pause for 10 seconds as the two-part roof slides down and folds into the back, and voilà…you’ve got the ultimate open-top hypercar! Key to the appeal is the noise: The husky growl of the twin-turbocharged V8 sounds better than the F1 cars of Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton. This is something incredible, especially when the most high-performance Corvette models have always been hardtops for Chevy.
The Grand Sport is arguably the original daily-drivable sports car that’s also a thoroughbred track car. You can take it on an impromptu trip to the mountains or drive to and from work every day without crushing your back. And unlike most of the track-focused models that are too intense to drive anywhere else, Grand Sport does its job so smoothly.
On top of that solid foundation, the Grand Sport produces 460 hp, which is plenty. But Chevy also offers the Corvette Z06 Convertible with a 650 hp supercharged V8 for more power. It shares its 6.2-liter LT1 V8 with the base Corvette Stingray, along with seven-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmissions. The Corvette also features aerodynamic upgrades and numerous suspension over the base Corvette Stingray, plus ultra grippy Michelin Pilot Super Sport Cup 2 tires and carbon-ceramic brakes.
The current C7-generation special has more expressive styling than the previous series, and the interior is well-designed and ergonomic for a modern car. The coupé wore exclusive Ceramic Matrix Gray paint, features Carbon 65 graphics on the doors and fenders with carbon fibre accents on the rocker-panel blades, splitter, spoiler, hood insert, rear fender ducts, wheel caps, side mirrors, and about half of the steering-wheel rim. The interior’s blue stitching, additional black micro suede accents, and carbon-fibre trim classed up the cabin. The Grand Sport offers an impressive level of refinement. An 8-inch Chevrolet MyLink touch screen for navigation, entertainment, and phone settings runs about halfway across the dashboard. It also includes Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, along with 4G LTE-based Wi-Fi. It’s not just powerful and sharp; it’s high-tech, too.
