Following her 2003 debut in Boom alongside Amitabh Bachchan, B-Town girl Katrina Kaif has become a big shot in the industry with many blockbuster hits to her credit. The year 2007 was a turning point in her acting journey, with films like Namaste London and Partner coming her way, where she was spotted alongside Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan, respectively. This was followed by lead roles in two of Anees Bazmee’s directorials: Welcome and Singh is Kinng.
And of course, her eye-catching appearances in popular item numbers like ‘Sheela Ki Jawani’ and ‘Chikni Chameli’ broke all sorts of records online, and helped re-establish the cameo trend in Bollywood films. During the 90s, almost every other film had an item song featuring a lead actor, like Malaika Arora-SRK’s ‘Chaiyya Chaiyya’ from Dil Se and Shilpa Shetty’s ‘UP Bihar Lootne’ from the movie Shool. However, between 2009 and the early part of 2012, Katrina faced the lowest phase of her cinematic career, with few of her movies attaining box office success.
But thanks to Kabir Khan’s directorial Ek Tha Tiger, Katrina made a massive comeback in Bollywood. And the film’s 2017 sequel, Tiger Zinda Hai, proved to be a benchmark for the artiste as she went on to enter the 500-crore club. Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, the film featured Katrina and Salman Khan as top spies, with a love angle involved. Some observers believe the Phantom girl shares a warm relationship with the Dabangg actor ever since their first on-screen appearance in the 2004 Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya, which featured Sushmita Sen in the pivotal role of nurse Naina.
In her long journey spanning over one and a half decades, the multi-tasking girl has not only established herself as an astonishing performer, but has become a global glamour icon. She has recently emerged as the most popular Indian actress overseas, as per a survey by popular live-streaming social media app Spuul.
Katrina is typically one of the most Googled personalities in India, and one of the most endorsed celebs in the country. She was in the news a few months ago for joining hands with two new brands, and has been voted the ‘Hottest Woman in the Country’ several times over.
Speaking of Katrina, acclaimed director Kabir Khan said, “There is no one in the industry more hardworking than Katrina Kaif. Because she started from a place of not knowing anybody when she first came into the industry, hence she has worked that much harder.” Last year, Katrina was honoured with the Glamour Icon award at Hello magazine’s annual fashion and style celebration.
She has also been quite active on the social front. The actress grabbed headlines for visiting the students of Mountain View School in Tamil Nadu while Kat was there shooting for Aanand L. Rai’s much awaited film, Zero, and rehearsing for the Dabangg tour in Pune. Based in Dindigul, the school was established in 2015 as part of Relief Project India, to provide English-medium education to underprivileged students.
The 34-year-old, who already has an impressive kitty of hit songs like ‘Mashallah’, ‘Kameli’, ‘Afgan Jalebi’ and ‘Kaala Chashma’, has another upbeat track, ‘Suraiyya’ from the multi-starrer project
Thugs of Hindostan, coming up. Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, the film will showcase the actress in the lead role of dancer Suraiyya, alongside Aamir Khan. Katrina’s first look from the film was revealed last month, and has already garnered over 3.6 million views.
Speaking about her experience working on Thugs of Hindostan, Katrina reveals, “It was absolutely fantastic. This is my second film with Vijay sir, and he’s such a phenomenal director to work with. Every time I work with him I am blown away by his vision and by the spectacle he tries to create. Just being part of this film is a huge honour for me.
Apart from Thugs of Hindostan which is set to release on November 8 in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu, Kat has another film with Salman Khan, titled Bharat that will hit the theatres mid-next year.
