Weddings in India are magnanimous affairs, and they’re the one time every Indian family loves to splurge. After all, this is one of the most important occasions in a person’s life, and families will go to great lengths to make it a memorable occasion for everyone taking part in the celebrations. One of the most important parts of a wedding is undoubtedly the photography, since this is the element that converts those special moments into precious memories that will last a lifetime. Wedding photography has come a long way from what it once was; today, in the whirlwind of the Big Fat Indian Wedding, the right wedding photographer can make the bride and groom, their families and friends look like they’ve stepped straight out of a movie. Hyderabad is known for hosting some extraordinarily lavish weddings, and a grand wedding calls for a skilful photographer. That’s where Harish Kosuru comes in.
What does your job as a wedding photographer entail? And what led you to pursue it as a profession?
I like to live the moment and capture it as well, and what better expression than the one that can be cherished in the form of a photograph started as a passion and slowly became a profession. As a wedding photographer I don’t just capture the event that is happening, but also those moments which are candid. These candid moments convey a lot in terms of the emotions, happiness, and occasional confusion.
My first experience with photography was when I was in the eighth standard, when my elder brother bought his first smartphone that had a camera on it. Back then it was a new and exciting concept for me, which made me capture my first few pictures. This excitement turned into my passion and then my profession, which today is highly fulfilling for me.
What is the most exciting part of your job, and what are some of the most fun weddings you have covered?
The most exciting part of being a photographer is looking at all the beauty in a frame even before it is captured; this makes the moment so much more beautiful. Those smiles, those special moments, the intimate family emotions make me excited to capture a wedding. A wedding in itself is an exciting and once-in-a-lifetime memory which I feel privileged to help relive and cherish. The most exciting weddings are destination weddings, as you get to experience the place, its locales, and the people. I’ve had the privilege of experiencing a few spectacular ones, and can confidently vouch for them being fun – not only for the families and friends of the couple, but also for those who are capturing these moments. Everyone is in a different and lighter mood, away from the routine of their everyday lives.
What’s the one thing that the families and the couples should know before enlisting a wedding photographer?
Every photographer has their own way of seeing and capturing things, they have their unique style of presenting the moments. Therefore, there is no one standard rule that applies when one is enlisting a wedding photographer. Seeing someone’s work can give you a good idea of their style and flair for photography. And once one picks a photographer, I would say trust us to do our job.
What have been some of the most unusual requests that you have recieved from a wedding party?
There is no such thing as an unusual request, as there is no particular style that I follow. I try to be candid in capturing the moments and incorporate any and all requests I might get from the bride or groom because, after all, it is their day!
What advice do you have for people who tend to shy away from the camera?
I mostly capture candid moments so they don’t have to pose straight at the camera. They just have to “live the moment” and give me that chance to freeze them. Even the shyest of couples have their beautiful moments together, which are brilliantly captured though candid photos. These are often more endearing to see that the posed and contrived ones. --- as told to Suneela
