In the opening match of the ICC Cricket World Cup, England beat South Africa by 104 runs. Joffra Archer destroyed the batting line up of the opposition by dismissing Aiden Markram (11), skipper Faf du Plessis (7) and threw a bouncer to Hashim Amla that sent him back to the pavilion.
Earlier, Faf Du Plessis chose to field after winning the toss. The South African bowlers looked like they were going to topple the batting line up after Imran Tahir sent Jonny Bairstow for a duck. This was followed by good bowling from Ngidi and Rabada who bagged three and two wickets each, respectively.
Inspite of a great bowling spell, four English batsmen managed to hit half-centuries. Ben Stokes top scored with 89 followed by Eoin Morgan, Jason Roy and Joe Root who scored 57, 54 and 51 runs, respectively.
However, the star of the show was Ben Stokes who was a class apart from the others in all three aspects of the game. After a stunning one-handed catch, Stokes played a part in two other dismissals and took two consecutive wickets to end the game. -Nitasha Silesh and PTI
