Hyderabad will have its first-ever Jazz Festival from 25 to 27 November at the Secunderabad Club. Jazz as we know, has a discerning and niche following in the country. But Indian jazz musicians are few and far between, and a top-notch one is a rare find.
Hyderabad is fortunate to have one of the best jazz drummers, Adrian D’Souza, performing at the jazz festival with his trio. He’s the brand ambassador for Zildjian.
He got his first drum kit when he was just five years old, and thus equipped he went on to win competitions for years in succession. As a teenager he was the drummer for Indian jazz musician Louis Banks. He then moved to New York to take the drummer’s seat in renowned jazz vocalist Roseanna Vitro’s band. During his years in the US he got the chance to study under Peter Erskine (of Weather Report) and record with some of the best names in jazz on their albums.
His performances include those with well-known names such as Al Jarreau, Ravi Coltrane, Earl Klugh and George Duke. Adrian has had successful appearances in Slovenia with the ‘Maribor Philharmonic Orchestra’ featuring Roseanna Vitro. He was also invited to perform at the United Nations’ ‘World Summit on Sustainable Development’ in South Africa to perform with the World Philharmonic Jazz Orchestra.
Adrian’s style of drumming is unique yet understated. The Zen Buddhist practices that he follows in his personal life, he carries over in his approach to music and art -- communicating rhythm, space, intensity and dynamics, effortlessly and with finesse.
He describes his music in these words: “The simplest music can be the most complex, the most understated and divine.” To catch the Adrian D’Souza Trio you will need to head to the Secunderabad Club on November 26, 8 pm.
