WHAT A SPORT!
Akshita Bhopal talks with You & I
You are currently studying at Sarah Lawrence College in New York. What is college life like there?
I love studying at Sarah Lawrence. I’m actually a little upset that that I only have one year left! I am pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music, specifically in Classical Vocal Performance. The education I receive there is superb; the instruction is specific, the teachers dedicated and the opportunities rewarding. College life is fantastic as well. There is a lot of independence you get when you leave home. You really learn to rely on yourself, which is very important. Because I am very close to my family, it can be hard at times to be so far away. But I keep myself busy with music, and I have wonderful friends with whom I spend my free time. All in all, I’m having a wonderful experience at college.
You are also an opera singer. Have you had any formal vocal training? What made you choose opera?
I’ve been studying opera for about seven years. It’s my passion and it keeps me going; sometimes it can be difficult because I know a song or aria is never a finished product – there is always something that can be improved. It’s especially nerve-racking to perform, but once you find that you have taken the audience on an emotional journey, it becomes so rewarding. When you find that you have given the audience a moment of truth, then your job as the interpretive artist is done.
